Microsoft announced that Windows 10 is reaching its end of life (EOL) on October 14, 2025. The operating system will still technically function but will no longer receive important security or performance updates going forward. However, due to the costs and training associated with getting a new operating system, some businesses may consider sticking with an outdated Windows 10 system. This is extremely risky since after the final Windows 10 support dates, users will face various cybersecurity, compatibility, compliance, and performance challenges. As you’ll learn in this blog, these issues aren’t just annoying, they can wreak havoc on your entire business.

Increased Vulnerability to Cyberattacks

Windows 10 support dates are passing quickly, and cybercriminals are very aware of this. Following the Windows 10 EOL this operating system won’t receive any more security updates, leaving your devices wide open to new cyberthreats. Cybercriminals know this and will launch targeted attacks exploiting the vulnerabilities left by unpatched systems on your Windows 10 computer. This could lead to data breaches, intense financial losses, and ruined reputations for losing sensitive data.

It should be noted that Microsoft is offering a temporary solution to these cybersecurity issues after the Windows 10 EOL deadline. Businesses will be able to purchase Extended Security Updates (ESUs) for the following three years. These updates will cost $61 for the first year with the price doubling each year after that. ESUs will also only work on Windows 10 version 22H2 and you will receive no technical support from Microsoft. While this option may protect your devices in the short term, it leaves you right back where you started after three years.

Lack of Software Compatibility and Support

Even if you decide to stay with your Windows 10 computer after its EOL date, that doesn’t mean your other business applications will continue to work with it. After the last Windows 10 support dates, all third-party software providers will stop working with this operating software due to the security issues it will face after EOL. This could lead to serious disruptions in your daily workflows or even cause extended downtime as you scramble to find a solution. It’s also likely the vendor will not be able to provide technical support since fixing the issue requires a new, up-to-date operating system. Stay ahead of potential problems by updating your Windows 10 computer or purchasing a newer model altogether.

Non-Compliance with Industry Regulations

Not only are out of date operating systems dangerous and inconvenient, but they can also lead to legal repercussions. Certain industries like healthcare and finance have strict compliance standards operating systems must meet. At a bare minimum, your devices must be up to date with the latest cybersecurity patches to keep sensitive information safe. If you are found to be out of compliance, your business will face steep fines, ruined reputation, revoked certifications, or even jail time. These consequences can drain your wallet, increase downtime, and destroy your business’ reputation.

Decreased Performance and System Stability

Technology is continuously evolving to work better and faster. As a result, sticking with an older operating system like Windows 10 could potentially lead to massive compatibility issues with hardware and software. These newer systems aren’t designed to work with older technology, leading to frequent crashes and application failures. This will severely disrupt business efficiency and productivity as your necessary systems will fail to perform even at a basic level.

Increased Long-Term Costs

Staying on Windows 10 after its EOL may seem like a less expensive option when compared to purchasing an all-new operating system, but this isn’t true in the long run. Security breaches, hardware replacements, and prolonged downtime are all more likely to occur after the Windows 10 support dates pass. This makes surprise expenses more likely to pop up as you scramble to find solutions to these avoidable problems.

The cost and stress of keeping your Windows 10 computer after its EOL isn’t worth it. Microsoft announced the end of Windows 10 support dates in advance so you could plan accordingly. Upgrading to Windows 11 is free, so long as your computers meet the proper specifications. If your Windows 10 computer is too out of date, then you will have to purchase new hardware and operating systems. While this may be more expensive up front, it is actually going to save you money by avoiding costly breaches and lost productivity. Newer operating systems like Windows 11 have the latest security updates and are less likely to break down, saving you repair and replacement costs in the future.
